PHOENIX, Feb. 23 – Scholarships for 10 professionals will be available at the Society of American Business Editors and Writers annual conference March 19-21 at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix.

The awards range from $299 to $1,000, announced Warren Watson, SABEW executive director.

Benita Newton Minority Scholarships

Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to minority journalists from SABEW’s Benita Newton Fund, set up to honor Newton, a young reporter who died in 2005 while in her first year of her first business journalism position at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. Preference, of course, will be given to business journalists.

Candidates should submit a letter and resume to Warren Watson via e-mail at wats...@asu.edu. In the letter prospective scholarship recipients should address two questions: why they feel they are deserving of an award, and what they plan to do with the knowledge they gain from the three days of sessions at the conference. Please paste both the letter and resume in the body of the e-mail. Benita Newton Minority Scholarship application deadline: Friday, March 5, 11:59 p.m.

Candidates may also mail their application to Watson in care of SABEW, c/o ASU Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, 555 N. Central Ave., Suite 302, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

David Morrow Prize Awards

SABEW also will award five $500 scholarships to the conference for deserving and passionate professional journalists.

Again, preference will be given to specialists in business journalism, particularly in the area of digital media. The awards will be drawn from the David Morrow Prize, a new fund set up in honor of Morrow. The former editor of TheStreet.com and a SABEW board member, Morrow died recently of cancer.

The Morrow Prize will also fund three mini-scholarships of $299 each. The scholarships can be used to pay registration to the Phoenix conference.

Interested candidates for each award should e-mail or mail a resume and a cover letter to Watson at the addresses above. In the letter, each prospective scholarship recipient should address two questions: (1) Why he or she feels he or she is deserving of an award, and (2) what he or she plans to do with the knowledge they gain from the three days of sessions at the conference to innovate and stand out from the crowd. Additional preference will be given to journalists with less than five years of experience. Morrow Prize scholarship application deadline: Friday, March 5, 11:59 p.m.

Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism will also donate two additional scholarships for SABEW conference attendees.
