Job description, qualifications, and HOW and WHERE TO APPLY:

The Blade is looking for an experienced business writer, with background in corporate finances, utilities, or manufacturing preferred. The position will join a staff that works hard to keep tabs on the local business scene and to bring to life stories about business trends that affect local companies and workers. It will involve writing daily stories and in-depth Sunday perspective pieces. We’re looking for applicants with daily newspaper experience, solid reporting and investigative skills, and strong writing skills to make deadly dull numbers stories interesting to a general readership.

We circulate in northwest Ohio and part of southeast Michigan, which broadens the scope of stories. We have a strong manufacturing base in the automotive industry, but our economy is changing and our affordable quality of life can generate business trends.

Applicants should present stories that demonstrate enterprise and the ability to peak behind corporate announcements to reveal the “real” story. We’re also looking for someone with the ability to produce stories for both our print edition and our Web site, toledoblade.com.

The Blade prides itself on strong reporting. The paper won a Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting in 2004, and has been a finalist two other times since 2000. We strive to give our readers — in print and online — news first about local businesses. Business stories frequently make it on Page 1 so writing that makes the story understandable to the general public and not just business section readers is important.
