Crain’s Chicago Business seeks a managing editor to oversee coverage of business and economic news in metropolitan Chicago. Reporting to the editor, this is the number two position in our newsroom. The managing editor provides day-to-day newsroom leadership in a competitive news market, with responsibility for extending Crain’s lead as the number one source of Chicago business news.

Duties include: working with reporters to develop story ideas for our weekly print publication and Web site; plan coverage for the upfront news section of the paper, an agenda-setting mix of scoops, personality-driven features and forward-looking analysis; edit stories for print, online and special projects; coordinate the work of reporters, copy editors, designers, multimedia producers and others involved in producing stories.

The position requires several years of business journalism experience as a reporter and editor. It also requires:

  • Strong news judgment
  • Thorough understanding of business, finance and economics
  • Knowledge of the Chicago business community a definite plus
  • Skillful editing touch with news and feature stories. You must be able to quickly turn raw copy into polished, engaging stories with the edge, sophistication and authority readers expect from Crain’s
  • A competitive nature; immunity to corporate spin and intimidation; determination to strip away the veneer of PR palaver and get the real story; ability to motivate reporters and work collaboratively with wide-ranging personality types across the newsroom
