Dick Davis, executive director of the Kyoto Symposium Organization in San Diego, invites SABEW freelancers to apply for the Kyoto Symposium journalism fellowship, an all-expense paid week in Japan.  The application deadline is
Sept. 10, winners will be notified Sept. 20 and the trip will take place in early November.

The trip comes with a modest per diem and no honorarium.  Experience reporting on Japan is not required and fellows aren’t obligated to write about the trip.

The journalism fellows will be present for the awarding of the Kyoto Prize Nov. 10 and for the ceremonies, dinners and workshops that follow Nov. 10-12.

“Fellows are given private access to the three new Kyoto Prize Laureates and usually Kyoto Prize founder (and Kyocera/KDDI founder and current Japan Air Lines CEO) Dr. Kazuo Inamori,” Davis explains.  ”It is a great experience–both for those with minimal or substantial background with Japan.”

Kyocera was the source of funding for the Kyoto Prize, but Laureates are typically scientists and arts/humanities people with modest degrees of business interest. A young stem cell pioneer this year does have substantial work with immediate business activity and implications, Davis says.
