Where do business and education meet? A primer prepared by the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media, ”Business Leaders and the New Education Agenda: Investments in Our Littlest Learners,” gives business reporters some answers, university officials say.

The primer was published “at a time when the nation spends nearly $1 trillion annually on education, from pre-kindergarten through postgraduate programs,” according to a statement by the institute.

“The publication takes a close look at the push to expand pre-kindergarten, which is supported by many business and policy leaders, and provides tips on understanding the relevant research,” the statement went on. “The global competitiveness of US. students, especially in math and science, is also scrutinized. Story ideas, examples of great reporting on business issues within education, and details on some of the major players influencing education policy today are all included.”

The 16-page primer was co-edited by Richard Lee Colvin and Justin Snider. It was produced by the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media (http://hechinger.tc.columbia.edu/) at Teachers College, Columbia University.
