A one-page cover letter may be submitted with entries as a PDF. (To help the judges keep track of things, please style the PDF title like this: yournamecoverletter.PDF)

Submit entries as PDFs or permalink URLs.

Unless otherwise noted, entries may include up to five elements, including but not limited to stories, videos, graphics.

Content from an organization’s website, even if online-only, should be entered in these categories.

V.(a) Print — Daily newspapers

Size groupings

Size group determined by five-day average circulation.

Group Dailies 1: Circulation up to 100,000

Group Dailies 2: Circulation 100,001 to 200,000

Group Dailies 3: Circulation 200,001 to 400,000

Group Dailies 4: Circulation 400,001 and above

1(a). General Excellence

Entry will consist of four business sections (may include any other business-related coverage from that date) that exemplify a news organization’s quality, strength and consistency over time.

Choose two dates published on a weekday and two published on a weekend.

Entry must be submitted as four PDFs – one for each issue date. PDF file names should be styled with the paper name and the issue date. For example, a General Excellence PDF from the Dallas Morning News of Feb. 7, 2012, should be named:

2.(a) Breaking News

Coverage of a single news event on the day it breaks. Can be reactive reporting, or proactive news broken by a reporter or news organization’s reporting staff.

3.(a) Investigative

In-depth, enterprise reporting that: a) presents important and necessary information that was unknown to the general readership/viewership and was unavailable from other sources before publication; b) demonstrates an obvious need for change in law/policy/behavior.

4.(a) Explanatory

In-depth reporting that presents, defines, unpacks, and simplifies a single important topic and/or news event in a way that allows the reader/listener/viewer to understand it more clearly.

5.(a) Feature

Reporting that: a) does not require a time element to be relevant; and b) demonstrates creative approaches to writing and/or presentation.

6. (a) Commentary

Reported coverage that reflects the point of view of a writer, writers and/or news organization. Category includes unsigned editorials, individual columns and blogs.

Entrants should choose their best four examples. For unsigned editorials, names of editorial board members must be included in the list of contributors.
