Reynolds Center 2011 training scheduleSpecial to SABEW

PHOENIX- Workshops in how to detect corporate fraud and create data visualizations will be offered by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at SABEW’s Annual Conference in Phoenix March 27-29.

Detecting Corporate Fraud is for any journalist who wants to learn the basics of corporate fraud detection using public documents. The workshop will be held before the conference starts, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. March 27. The workshop will be free to all journalists – not just conference attendees – and you can sign up here.

Data Visualization: A Hands-On Primer for Business Journalists is a hands-on workshop, where you will discover how data visualization – turning data and numbers into images –  strengthens stories. The workshop is from 8:45-11:45 a.m. on March 28, during the conference. Registration is required since space is limited. Register here, and tick the box for “Data Visualization hands-on workshop.”

Instructors for Detecting Corporate Fraud are Theo Francis and Roddy Boyd. Francis is an investigative reporter for The Wall Street Journal, specializing in using regulatory documents to dig into corporate behavior. He’s also the author of BusinessJournalism.org’s Guide to SEC Data. Boyd is an investigative reporter and founder of the Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing document-driven investigative reporting on public companies.

Boyd will also teach an abbreviated version of Detecting Corporate Fraud as a session during the conference on March 29.

Your instructor for Data Visualization is Dianne Finch, visiting assistant professor of communications at Elon University, where she teaches business reporting and data visualization.

These training opportunities continue a long tradition of collaboration between Reynolds and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW), which are both headquartered at the Cronkite School.
