This year’s David J. Morrow Business Scholarship winner is Thad Moore of the University of South Carolina

Special to SABEW

PHOENIX- The University of South Carolina and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers announce the selection of Thad Moore as the winner of the David J. Morrow Business Scholarship.

The award is given annually to a graduate or undergraduate student studying business journalism at USC, and the winner attends SABEW events across the country. The award is being expanded this year to include fall visits to newsrooms of major media companies in New York

“Thad Moore is an intrepid young journalist.  He is curious.  He’s smart.  He’s a writer at heart,” said Carol J. Pardun, director, School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of South Carolina. “And he cares about everything!  When we first began our business journalism initiative, Thad (as a freshman!) immediately understood why business journalism was important for anyone who wanted to report.  David Morrow would be very proud.”

The award was created in memory of Morrow, the late editor-in-chief of the Street.com and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. The scholarship’s mission is to encourage strong writing and reporting on business and financial issues.

“We’re thrilled with the selection of Mr. Moore, and excited to give him the chance to spend a week in New York in a newsroom environment,” said Kevin G. Hall, SABEW president and chief economics correspondent for McClatchy Newspapers.

The expansion of the award means that winners will get a tailored visit to a number of major news outlets in the week that leads up to SABEW’s annual fall conference in New York.

“We think this hands-on learning experience should further ground the Morrow winners in high-level business reporting. It offers them a unique chance to meet potential future employers,” Hall said. “Mentoring and connecting are two major elements of SABEW’s core mission.”

Moore will be introduced at SABEW during the annual conference, now under way in Phoenix.
