February Teletraining:  “The New Blueprint for Mobile Journalism”

Readers are increasingly consuming business news in bite-sized sessions on smart phones and tablets. For many news organizations, this represents a sea change in the way they must deliver coverage to readers. During this session, we’ll do a deep dive into mobile news and examine why it’s poised to be even more of a driving force in 2015 than it has been in past years. Our panel will talk about how to create a mobile culture in your newsroom and give you quick take-aways that will make your mobile coverage sing. Whether you’re just getting a handle on mobile news or you’re already knee-deep into this latest trend, this call is for you.

Moderator:

Gary Kebbel. Gary Kebbel is a journalism professor and former dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a founding editor of USA Today.com and Newsweek.com and a former home page editor of washingtonpost.com. He is currently Nigeria teaching political reporters how to use mobile and social media to cover their country’s presidential election.

Panelists:

Emily Banks. Emily Banks is lead news editor for mobile content at The Wall Street Journal. She works with journalists, as well as developers and designers, to create content for mobile. Previously she was the managing editor at Mashable. Based in New York City, Emily has experience in digital media, television, radio and print.

Etan Horowitz. Etan Horowitz is the senior mobile editor for CNN Digital. As the editorial lead for all of CNN’s mobile products, Etan works closely with CNN editorial teams to plan and publish news and information optimized for phones, tablets and other mobile devices. As a key member of the homepage team, Horowitz also drives awareness of mobile audience behavior through training and the use of analytic tools. Before joining CNN, Horowitz was a reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, where he covered technology culture, trends and local companies.

Alan Mutter. Alan Mutter is a former newspaper editor, cable-television executive and Silicon Valley CEO who today serves as a strategic consultant to both traditional and digital media companies. He teaches media economics and entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California and writes about the changing media landscape on his popular blog, Reflections of a Newsosaur. Mutter began his career as a reporter and financial columnist, rising to top editing positions at the Chicago Sun-Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.
