First the Super Bowl, then SABEW in Indiana’s capital in 2012

PHOENIX — Indianapolis will be host to two major events in 2012.

One will be the annual conference and convention of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers….

….The other will be a little football game  called the Super Bowl!

Last week, the Board of Directors of SABEW voted to designate the Indiana capital as the site for its spring conference in either March or April in 2012.  SABEW will follow the Super Bowl, which will be played in February 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

By a unanimous vote, the 22-member SABEW board agreed to host its annual conference in the Indiana capital.  It will be the first time SABEW will go to Indy.

“We’re delighted at the prospects of SABEW coming to Indianaapolis,” said Dennis Ryerson, editor and vice president of The Indianapolis Star, the city’s major media company. “SABEW is an important organization.”

In addition to the Star, the Indianapolis Business Journal, the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the journalism programs at Indiana University and Ball State University pledged support for the conference, to be held on the campus of the 30,000-student Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus.

In recent years, Indianapolis has been host to numerous conventions and special events, including the Final Four, major golf tournaments, and journalism conventions conducted by the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists, among others.

“The central location of Indianapolis made it a popular choice with our board,” said Warren Watson, SABEW executive director.  “It’s a short and affordable flight for many, including our many members on the east coast.  But it’s also driveable from Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis and many Midwest spots.”

SABEW, with 3,200 members, recently conducted its annual conference at the Cronkite School at Arizona State University March 19-21.  About 300 business journalists and others attended the three-day event.

Southern Methodist University in Dallas will be the host of next year’s SABEW conference, April 9-11.
