Chuck Ringwalt named winner of SABEW’s David J. Morrow Scholarship at University of South Carolina

Special to SABEW

PHOENIX- Chuck Ringwalt, a senior majoring in broadcast, is the 2014-2015 recipient of the David J. Morrow Scholarship for Business Journalism at the University of South Carolina.

The Morrow scholarship is a partnership between the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the leading professional organization for financial journalists.

The award is given annually to a graduate or undergraduate student studying business journalism at USC. The winner attends at least one SABEW event, and gets the opportunity to meet with journalists at leading media institutions during a visit to New York City.

“I had an incredible time attending this year’s SABEW Conference. I met some of the most intelligent and hardworking journalists in the business,” Ringwalt said. “The insight you all shared has already helped me have an advantage among my colleagues and I look forward to continuing to learn from all of you in the future.”

The award was created in memory of Morrow, the late editor-in-chief of TheStreet.com and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. The scholarship’s mission is to encourage strong writing and reporting on business and financial issues.

“We’re thrilled with the selection of Chuck Ringwalt and glad to give him the chance to spend a week in New York in a newsroom environment,” said Joanna Ossinger, SABEW president, a top-news editor at Bloomberg. “I worked with Dave Morrow at TheStreet, and I know he would be proud to see the opportunities his legacy is providing for USC journalism students.”

SABEW Executive Director Kathleen Graham introduced Ringwalt at the organization’s annual spring conference in Chicago, April 24. “Chuck is a curious, smart and confident young journalist,” said Graham. “He is highly motivated and willing to put in the hard work needed to succeed in today’s competitive broadcast environment.”

The Morrow Scholarship is part of the school’s broader Business Journalism Initiative, funded through a grant from SABEW and USC alumnus Ken Baldwin.
