College Connect: Is quick cash hanging in your closet?

Do you have old things just hanging around your closet? I know I do. Students are always wondering how we can save money, make money, and keep money. Sometimes the answers to those questions are right inside of your bedroom. Your clothes can collect a serious profit. Those old jeans your grandma gave you in 2008 aren’t cool anymore, now is the time to recycle and make money.

I can give you a serious testimony of success from these methods. There’s an app for both iPhone and android called Poshmark. It’s been a lifesaver for my rent and social life. I found out about it through my mom a couple years ago. She had made over $3,000 selling name brand shoes and clothes within a very short amount of time. After hearing how much success she had I knew I had to try it.

Poshmark is a type of online consignment store. You can upload pictures of clothing and accessories to your “closet” and millions of people from around the nation can purchase that clothing. Everything is completely free. You sign up with your Facebook account, and everything is automatically linked to all of your friends, further helping your efforts. One of the best things about Posh is when you do sell something, the app covers you’re the shipping to send it to the buyer. When the buyer receives the item, the money is kept on your account until you redeem it by check or direct deposit into your bank account. I’ve personally made over a grand with the app, it’s a great way to clean out your closet and earn a little more money.

If you’re not into the online side of things, you should try visiting a local consignment shop. Not only is it a way to get cash for your clothes, but you can usually snag a great deal. We have a couple different options in my town. Those stores usually require you to show ID and bring your clothes in some type of bag. They’ll look through the clothes, and depending on condition, brand, season, and current fashion they will take what they can. A tip that’s always helped me max out my sales are always being a season ahead. Stores start buying for summer in the spring. If its not quite swimsuit time but you know you’re in need of a new one for this year, go ahead and sell it to one of these kinds of stores. You’ll be one step ahead of everyone who waits until summer to get rid of theirs.

Buy, trade, and sell forums are an option I don’t have much experience with, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about them. I have friends who swear it’s the best place to find name brands at low prices. That just proves that name brands are the best way to make money. The oldest pair of name brand shoes you don’t even care about could be bring you some big bucks if you take the time to put them out there. Most of these groups are found on social media sites. You just post the picture and wait for someone to respond.

All of these options are pretty simple and free. The work of posting your listings can be tedious, but putting in the effort will definitely be worth your while.
