2016 Board of Governors Candidate – Neil Roland

Head of US financial regulations team
Lexis-Nexis’ MLex News

I’d like to help invigorate SABEW and increase its penetration by tapping my quarter-century of business journalism experience, my digital and international perspective, and a history of service as a teacher and coach.

I’m particularly intrigued by the opportunity to serve on the board’s training committee, offering webinars and teletraining to various niches in the evolving business reporting sector.

While SABEW has done much to improve business coverage for half a century, it would benefit from still more journalist membership and participation, both domestically and abroad.

To that end, I bring an extensive contact list built during years of Washington, D.C., work for Bloomberg News, Crain’s business publications and now Lexis-Nexis’s MLex, a Brussels-based digital news service that is a US startup.

Over the years, my work has won a Loeb award, SABEW awards, a National Press Club award, a Jesse H. Neal award, and honors for medical, science and legal reporting.

As an editor and reporter, I head MLex’s coverage of US financial regulation and help lead reporting on international standard-setting.

MLex’s digital, subscription-only model is part of a wave of niche publications that have blossomed amid the search for new journalism paradigms. SABEW needs input from services like this to keep tabs on the evolving industry.

MLex’s global coverage tailors regulatory news from various agencies to markets around the world. This international perspective would enhance board diversity.

Furthermore, I have a service mentality vital for a group aiming to help others. I currently volunteer as a tutor at a women’s prison. I have coached youth basketball and soccer teams for 11 years, and have organized volunteers to serve the homeless, the disabled and Third World residents.

I also have appeared as a guest speaker at journalism programs at George Washington University graduate school, the National Press Foundation, and the National Defense University.

Having attended and volunteered for SABEW conferences, I would welcome the opportunity to also serve on its board.
