UCLA Communications & Public Outreach (UCOMM) increases awareness, understanding and support of UCLA’s vision, mission and accomplishments among its many constituencies. UCOMM employs community outreach and visibility strategies to cultivate increased recognition and support among public and opinion leaders for UCLA’s role as an engine for the quality of life in Los Angeles. Within UCOMM, the Office of Media Relations and Public Outreach (MRPO) offers multiple services to enhance the efforts of UCLA’s professional schools and other campus units to promote UCLA in the news media. To assist in providing strategic direction for these services, the Office of MRPO seeks a highly accomplished communications professional with a demonstrated record of success in national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and placement to serve as its Associate Director, Media Relations.

As a key member of UCOMM’s communications team, the Associate Director will be responsible for managing and supervising all unsolicited incoming media queries to the Office of Media Relations that typically involve sensitive issues requiring strategic media counsel and working with the UCOMM Associate Vice Chancellor, Senior Executive Director and campus leadership. Among a broad array of duties, the Associate Director will oversee communications issues; work with UCOMM leadership to direct campus communications efforts; manage media requests; and identify and develop feature news articles of national significance that advance UCLA’s interests and University leadership.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of substantial full-time professional media experience, preferably in new media and/or television news. Solid professional judgment, exceptional interpersonal skills, extensive media contacts and demonstrated reporting and writing skills are key criteria sought in candidates for this extraordinary opportunity. Also of particular interest are those with experience as a spokesperson for a high-profile institution in a large media market and demonstrated knowledge of news media operations and protocols, especially in the news-gathering process. In addition, the Associate Director will have the excellent organizational, project management and personnel skills needed to lead and manage a professional staff.
