Do you get satisfaction out of steering a team of reporters to produce a 20-page special section on a region’s 40-under-40 up-and-comers?

Or how about good, nuts-and-bolts, tax-and-budget reporting and analysis on state and local government?

If free enterprise, rags-to-riches stories, government reporting and working with reporters to produce award-winning business newspapers get you jazzed up, you may have what we’re seeking in an executive editor to head our company’s Business Observer and Jacksonville Financial News & Daily Record.

The Business Observer is a 20-year-old paid weekly that covers the Gulf Coast of Florida, from Tampa Bay to Naples, and was awarded the top General Excellence award in its circulation category two years in a row in the Florida Press Association’s Better Weekly Newspaper Contest. The Financial News & Daily Record is a 104-year-old, five-day-a-week business and legal daily — the newest member of our company’s 11 newspapers.

Together, they specialize in business coverage targeted at each market’s CEOs and business leaders — with emphasis on entrepreneur and company profiles; economic and industry trends; commercial real estate; and the intersection of government and business.

We’re seeking a leader for these papers who is excited to guide the reporting on these two regions’ fast-growing economies. It requires excellent story judgment, forward thinking, creative conceptualization, great planning and execution and the skills of an experienced wordsmith.

Whether it’s online or in print, our goal is to surprise and delight our readers with content that is relevant, informative, accurate and authoritative. As a hyper-local news organization, we believe our papers should be a reflection of the area. We believe in covering what matters most to our readers, be it serious issues that foster conversation or those people profiles that help connect the business community. And, we have some experience doing this. Our papers, websites and multimedia packages consistently win top honors for general excellence with the Florida Press Association, and four times in the past four years, three of our company’s newspapers were named Newspapers of the Year by the Local Media Association, an organization of 2,000 newspapers from the United States and Canada.

We want to deliver papers and websites that are full of engaging stories that have a unique angle and offer something the general dailies can’t.

This position involves a lot of planning, coordinating and creating. It means thinking through how each story will look on a page, with art and graphics, as well as how it could be presented online. It also means collaborating with a team of reporters and designers to give clear vision and leadership to ensure a high-level of execution.

The executive editor is responsible for planning, directing and editing stories for the print editions and daily updates online; and for providing vision and leadership to their experienced, professional staff of writers.

Must-haves include:

  • Proven copy-editing skills, including knowledge of all things AP style
  • Excellent news judgment for a weekly audience
  • An ability to think visually in storytelling
  • A passion for great writing
  • Enthusiasm for community and getting involved
  • A wicked sense of humor
  • A hard worker who’s not afraid to try new things
  • Great leadership skills and the ability to show others by doing
  • Ability to collaborate and play well with others
  • A desire to dream up and create unique content every week
