Description: Houston Business Journal is looking for a Data Reporter to compile the publication’s high-profile and award-winning investigative research projects and Lists. The job includes researching and analyzing data collected from surveys, regulatory agencies and other sources, and digging into available business data to find, investigate, report and write compelling and important local business news and stories. The data reporter will generate at least four to eight cover longer-form stories annually based on business data, including packages on Houston’s largest public companies and executive compensation; report breaking news on executive pay, executive changes and other document-sourced news; write analysis on data-generated news, primarily about public companies and banks; conceptualize new List and data-package ideas; help develop the annual editorial calendar and assist on national data projects.

Qualifications: Strong news judgment, news analysis and news writing skills; computer data-management applications; and proven ability to work with databases and spreadsheets to find patterns and stories; strong Microsoft Excel skills are a must; accuracy is paramount. Three years as a journalist with a track record of reporting on business data, especially public-company filings with the SEC and bank filings with various regulatory agencies; OR equivalent experience in a data-driven, business-focused environment.
