Job Description: The Managing Editor supervises our team of five reporters, serving as their coach, assigning editor and front-line editor. This person directs our daily news coverage and planning of our weekly print publication, which include big-picture stories, topical special reports, columns, news and feature stories.

Qualifications: Duties • Supervise and manage the reporting staff. • Direct and coordinate story assignments from concept to publication, including visuals and data required for charts and graphics. This involves going over story ideas and making story assignments, reviewing the progress of assignments with reporters after interviews and research and primary editing of stories upon completion. • Research and compile information for graphics and charts. • Manage the daily news report, which includes monitoring other local business news sources (The San Diego Union-Tribune, Voice of San Diego, KPBS, others), editing and posting stories for the web in coordination with other editors and setting up newsletters as needed. • Write headlines and captions as needed. • Proof pages for the weekly publication, supplements and the Book of Lists. • Write stories and news briefs as needed. • In absence of the Editor, manage the newsroom. Skills and background • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or equivalent experience • Strong story editor with a proven track record of developing reporters • Experience required as an assigning editor and managing people in a fast-paced, competitive news and/or business news environment • Must have outstanding people skills • Experience in business news and with a business publication is preferred but not required Relocation expenses are not provided.
