Job Description: Professor of Business Journalism—M.A. Program (Open Track and Rank). Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism is currently seeking a professor of journalism (rank and track to be determined), who would lead the Business concentration of our Master of Arts program. The successful incumbent would be an accomplished journalist and thought leader who is able to take advantage of the University’s location in the center of the world’s capital of business and media. We seek to hire someone who can build upon our M.A. business program, whose graduating students develop a global mindset, a thorough grounding in critical economic thinking, a deep understanding of the drivers of innovation and disruption and an ability to locate important stories in data and documents. She/he would help develop our business reporting curriculum and teach courses in the Graduate School of Journalism. International experience and/or perspective preferred. Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a faculty position, including an ability to teach graduate students at a major research university. The School and professorship embrace diversity and seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students. Candidates should have a strong background in business journalism, as well as professional experience in both traditional and innovative journalism, and the ability to teach all these essential skills. She/he must be up-to-date with best practices and the contemporary tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. A work history that shows a capacity to innovate and to be nimble in a fast-changing news environment is also important. As a full-time member of our faculty, the incumbent will teach at least one course each semester, often but not exclusively focusing on the area of business journalism. The incumbent also will read applications, serve on faculty committees as assigned, supervise master’s projects and theses and otherwise advise students. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred. This position will begin no earlier than July 1, 2018, pending budgetary and administrative approval.
