Congratulations to 2018 SABEW Birger Award Recipient
Alex Heath, 25, a senior reporter for Cheddar, is the 2018 winner of the Larry Birger Young Business Journalist contest, honoring journalists younger than 30. Additionally, the judging panel chose to honor two finalists — Dani Burger, Bloomberg News, and Robert Hackett, Fortune. Here’s the complete announcement.

SABEW Stands with Reuters
SABEW stands with member news organization Reuters in condemning the unjust sentencing on Sept. 3 of Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. They were sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of illegal possession of official documents in Myanmar. Read our full statement.

SABEW Board Update
Jenny Paurys, news desk manager at S&P Global Market Intelligence, has been appointed to the board of governors of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. Paurys replaces Amy Gleason, managing director of data management at S&P Global Market Intelligence.  

Caleb Silver, vice president, content of Investopedia/IAC was voted by the board of governors to replace Amy Gleason on the SABEW executive committee.    

What are College Students Saying About Money?
The College Connect blog on the SABEW website gives students a chance to share their experiences handling and managing money and credit. Check out this post from Hallie Smith, a student at the University of Georgia, about college students and credit scores.

  • Amy Gleason was promoted to managing director of data management at S&P Global Market Intelligence.  
  • Kimi Yoshino has been promoted to deputy managing editor at the Los Angeles Times. She will oversee sports, business, arts, entertainment and lifestyle coverage. Kimi was named the Los Angeles Press Club’s 2018 President’s Awardee for Impact on Media.  
  • Nicole Raz has been promoted to business editor at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, replacing long-time business editor Dan Behringer, who retired in April. 
  • Grace Donnelly — a Cox-SABEW fellow from fall 2015 — was recently promoted to associate editor at Fortune Magazine.
