2018 Annual Appeal

Posted By Aimee O'Grady

Dear Friends and Supporters of SABEW:

As we look across the media landscape globally and closer to home, the words of Charles Dickens come to mind.

He wrote in A Tale of Two Cities more than 150 years ago, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…”

Sorting out winners and losers in media has come at a mind-numbing pace in recent years. Thankfully, many outlets are thriving and adding staff, while some in smaller communities are struggling or laying off employees. There are also serious challenges in just doing the work, including sometimes deadly physical attacks and ugly verbal confrontations both in person and through social media.

But there are many reasons to be optimistic about our profession. There’s work to be done that is fundamental to our democracy and the personal financial success of people everywhere. The good news is that trusted information remains vitally important for our society, our nation and our world, including for individuals and businesses. Financial and business journalism continues to thrive broadly.

Here at SABEW, the leading association for business journalists, we’ve made it a priority to advocate for and encourage our members while also working to maintain the highest standards. These efforts include our popular Best in Business awards, conferences, workshops, virtual training and reporting fellowships.

We foster opportunities for effective networking and learning designed uniquely for business and financial journalists and others with a stake in our industry.

As the year draws to a close, we’re asking for you to support high quality, ethics-bound business and financial journalism with your charitable donation. Your gift will assist in training, fellowships and awards affirming the kind of work that our Founding Fathers intended. It helps further professional development of journalists across the breadth of the career spectrum. If you’ve personally attended our programs, you’ve seen firsthand how students and senior journalists (and all kinds of people in between) sit side by side and converse.

Please donate now to qualify for a 2018 charitable income tax deduction. You can do so online through the Mightycause secure site, www.mightycause.com/organization/Sabew, or by mailing a check to: SABEW, Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, ASU, 555 N. Central Ave., Suite 302, Phoenix, AZ 85004-1248.

Thank you for your support of SABEW. Here’s to a safe and happy holiday season! We’ll look forward to seeing you at our spring 2019 conference May 16-18 at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University in Phoenix and beyond.
