Dear Friends of SABEW:
I’d like to tell you about my morning routine. When I wake up, I check out Twitter to see what I’ve missed while sleeping. I open my front door and grab the newspaper to review the business section. While I brew some coffee, I listen to news radio. Once I sit at my desk, I go online and read through a few more stories or check out a podcast. By the time my day starts, I’ve read, listened to and watched a lot of journalism — with many of the stories created by you!
I mention all of that because, despite what politicians are saying about our “failed” profession, journalism — especially business journalism — is thriving. We have the opportunity to tell stories, deeply explore subjects and hold companies to account in ways our predecessors could not.
The work that you do — like exploring corporate culture, employee fairness, investing trends, economic analysis, money issues and more — is making a difference. However, with newsrooms under financial pressure and formerly full-time staff now reporting as freelancers, SABEW’s mission of fostering high-quality business journalism is more important than ever.
SABEW supports business journalists and news managers through:
• Monthly virtual trainings offering members new skills and ideas
• Goldschmidt and Commonwealth fellowships with deep dives into data and health care reporting
• Networking opportunities connecting you with your peers, which can lead to jobs and assignments
• Recognition like the Best in Business Awards and the Birger Young Business Journalist Award
• Bi-annual conferences with top business, political and thought leaders
SABEW Executive Director Kathleen Graham and I are asking you to join the SABEW leadership in giving a charitable donation so we can continue advancing business journalism as we have for more than 50 years.
You can do so online through the Mightycause secure site or by mailing a check to: SABEW, ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, 555 N. Central Ave., Suite 302, Phoenix, AZ 85004.
Thank you for your support of SABEW. I hope to see you at our 2020 spring conference in Toronto April 30 – May 1. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
