Job Description

The Well News is looking for a tech & telecom reporter to join its team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have at least five to seven years of experience as a journalist, with a background in generating story ideas and analysis for a sophisticated audience that includes industry executives, lobbying groups, policymakers and legislators.

The reporter will be expected to have and continue to develop sources in regulatory agencies, and connections on and off Capitol Hill, including trade groups and lobbying associations. Excellent writing skills along with following the news closely and thriving under deadline pressure are musts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Mastery of reporting and writing skills required to produce news stories and features with minimal editing under deadline.
  • Proven ability to develop and cover a beat, including developing sources, developing story ideas, and conducting interviews.
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes.
  • Meet deadlines and file clean, concise, and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and relatability.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and must be curious and able to generate feature ideas.
  • Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for trend stories.
  • Collaborate to develop story ideas, schedule them and deliver them on time while keeping in close touch about developments on news beat.
  • Digest large amounts of information, “see the story,” and execute with urgency as needed.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to mine legislation and regulatory filings for incisive stories.
  • Considers alternative means of telling stories, including graphics and video when appropriate and consistently maintain high-level sources in the government and private sector.
  • Participates in story planning meetings, special projects, and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Writing vivid, original articles, ranging in length from 300 words to more than 1,500 words, for publication; clean copy is mandatory.
