Feb. 28 – Effectively using public, private sector data in economic reporting

with BLS Commissioner William Beach and MIT Professor Roberto Rigobon

Monday, Feb. 28 at noon ET

Will the growing private sector data industry one day supplant the need for some federal data programs? Learn what journalists covering the economy need to know about the difference between public and private data and the value of both.

William W. Beach, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and Roberto Rigobon, professor of Applied Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management and research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, will discuss the nuances of reporting on data produced by the federal government and private organizations.

Under Commissioner Beach’s leadership, BLS uses alternative data sources and methodologies to supplement its traditional data collection methods and recently began to use JD Power data for its measure of inflation. The Harvard and MIT Billion Prices Project, created by Mr. Rigobon, uses prices collected from hundreds of online retailers around the world to conduct research into macro and international economics.

Kimberly Adams, host/correspondent for Marketplace, will moderate the discussion.
