SABEW condemns Russia’s detention extension of WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich

On Nov. 28, a court in Russia extended the illegal detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich until January 30. With his imprisonment now approaching 250 days, SABEW condemns this unlawful action which is an assault on our profession and on the public’s right to be informed.

As Dow Jones CEO Almar Latour and Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker wrote in a note to Dow Jones employees: “It’s reprehensible that he remains imprisoned under such extraordinary false accusations.”

The Journal and Dow Jones are encouraging the public to set an extra empty seat at the table at holiday gatherings and post photos using the #IStandWithEvan hashtag.

We encourage all SABEW members and the public to participate in this show of support for a colleague whose treatment is setting a terrible example and threatening to upend the norms for journalists who are simply going about their work.

SABEW is the largest association for business journalists and counts Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal among its member organizations.
