SABEW Membership Changes

Membership is vital to SABEWs long-term sustainability and we want to provide our members with value, through networking, training, mentoring and other benefits.

We have taken the last few months with the guidance of our membership committee to review our membership categories, how memberships are structured and the perks we offer to ensure we are providing members with a variety of benefits and tools to support them in their careers.

New membership categories

Last month, we announced two new membership categories. A retiree membership is now available for $35 a year for former business journalists who are no longer working or teaching. There is also a lifetime membership available for $1,000 for journalists of all ages who want to show their support to SABEW for the long term (and save some money).

New membership benefits

We are also excited to announce new benefits for SABEW members, including Bright Data and LinkedIn Premium for Journalists. We are also working on additional offerings, with a new one launching in January. These are in addition to the other benefits you receive with SABEW membership including training, mentoring, fellowships, and networking opportunities.

  • SABEW members receive full access to Bright Data’s marketplace datasets, web scraping experts, and OSINT tools to leverage public web data. If you are a beginner at data collection, we can deliver ready-made or custom-built datasets for use in your reporting. If you have technical skills, we can help you work more efficiently with rotating proxies, templated scrapers, and tools to overcome web scraping challenges. More details can be found here
  • LinkedIn for Journalists Premium Program is available for active journalists, editors, and freelancers. It is an application you must complete through LinkedIn. For those eligible, you’ll receive a redeemable 12-month LinkedIn Premium Business code.  More details can be found here

Institutional membership changes

Institutional memberships will be changing effective January 1, 2025 regarding covered individuals. Changes to covered individuals must be made at time of renewal. Changes cannot occur throughout the membership term except in cases where a covered person leaves the organization, takes a leave of absence (parental leave, disability, etc.) or has a material change of assignment within the company that would render them ineligible for SABEW membership. Organizations can increase their membership tier at any point during the year at current institutional rates.

Institutional contacts can view current roster of covered individuals on their membership by logging into the membership portal here. Once logged on, in the left menu, select subscription. Your membership will show with the number of seats included. Click on the three dots (ellipsis) and select “sub accounts”. This will provide the full list of covered individuals on your membership. At the time of renewal, you can send any changes to membership@sabew.org. Please note, changes must be made at the time of renewal with a few exceptions noted above.

Individual and Institutional Expiration Date Change

Institutional and individual memberships must be current through any events or awards for which they are under consideration.

  • Example: If the conference is March 20, membership must be current through April 1.
  • Example: If contest winners are announced March 20, membership must be current through April 1.
  • For fellowships, membership must be current through the duration of the fellowship.
  • Exception: Student awards include a one-year membership with the entry fee.
