Winner – InsideClimate News: Dangers without Borders

  • Contributor – Neela Banerjee, Sabrina Shankman, Nicholas Kusnetz, Paul Horn and Anna Belle Peevey
  • Judges’ Comments – Judges were impressed by InsideClimate News’ sheer scope and ambition with this project. Stories were written clearly and in real, not hypothetical terms — a difficult feat considering this is about a threat often discussed in the future tense. We loved the graphics and visuals, which aided the presentation.

In this category, the judges selected two honorable mentions.

Honorable Mention – Capital & Main: Battery Blood: How California Health Agencies Failed Exide Workers

  • Contributor – Joe Rubin
  • Judges’ Comments – This effort exposed the health dangers of a battery recycling plant and how California state agencies failed to protect workers from exposure. The story cuts against conventional wisdom and is a good reminder of the value of watchdog journalism.

Honorable Mention – New Haven Independent: ‘Scoops & tosses’ $160M in old debt

  • Contributor – Christopher Peak
  • Judges’ Comments – Judges wanted to particularly laud the effort required for this series, which dove into the complicated world of municipal finance debt. It’s not an easy subject, and it repels parachute journalism attempts. For the effort required to tackle a subject of this weight, an honorable mention.
