Mississippi journalist wins SABEW scholarship for minorities

PHOENIX — A student journalist from the University of Southern Mississippi has won the 2014 Benita Newton Award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Her $1,000 award will allow her to attend the March 27-29 SABEW spring conference in Phoenix.

Crystal Garner is currently a junior at Southern Mississippi, majoring in computer science and an emphasis in broadcast journalism.  She expects to graduate in May 2015.

She is a Digital Journalists Task Force intern with the National Association of Black Journalists, producing a weekly blog on trends in digital news.  A reporter at the Southern Mississippi Student Printz (correct), she has had a variety of student internships and other part-time assignments with a number of companies and universities since 2012.

The award honors Newton a young repoorter who died in 2005 while in her first year for her first business journalism position at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va.
