SABEW members eligible to study for investment certification

CFA_Institute_CMYK (2)PHOENIX — SABEW members are eligible to study for the Claritas Investment Certificate at no cost, thanks to a new partnership with CFA Institute.

CFA Institute, the organization behind the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, has agreed to provide a limited number of Claritas vouchers to SABEW members as part of the partnership. The program typically costs $685 for study materials and an exam sitting.

The Claritas Investment Certificate is a comprehensive global program designed to give participants a clear understanding of the investment industry and the professional responsibilities within it. Focused on the essentials of finance, ethics, and investment roles, the program requires approximately 100 hours of study and generally can be completed within six months.

It’s designed for people who want a financial certification from CFA Institute without going through the much more rigorous Chartered Financial Analyst program, which has three levels, thousands of pages of study materials, and takes at least 18 months to complete.

“When I passed Level I of the Chartered Financial Analyst program in December 2007, it was the hardest thing I’d ever done at that point in my life,” says SABEW Treasurer David Milstead. “If I’d had the option of the Claritas Investment Certificate at the time, I’d have been able to demonstrate that I was a journalist with quantitative skills, without struggling through an exam designed for investment professionals.”

“For every investment decision maker there are up to ten other professionals working alongside them,” says Donna Kozyra, manager of Industry Relations at CFA Institute. “We want to help to build their knowledge in line with our mission to shape an investment industry for the ultimate benefit of society.”

The Claritas opportunity is part of a broader SABEW partnership with CFA Institute that will see the institute providing content at SABEW conferences. Dr. Tom Robinson of CFA Institute will present a workshop “Making sense of companies’ earnings statements” on Friday, March 28 at SABEW’s annual conference in Phoenix. Also, CFA Institute representatives will be on hand to provide SABEW members with information about CFA Institute and the Claritas Investment Certificate.

SABEW members interested in sitting for the Claritas Investment Certificate should contact Warren Watson at watson@sabew.org or 602-496-5186. If demand for the opportunity outstrips supply, SABEW will set up a committee to evaluate applicants for the program.
