Lisa Gibbs receives SABEW’s top honor, the President’s Award

Lisa Gibbs, newly appointed business editor of The Associated Press, will be recognized by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers with one of its highest honors, the President’s Award.

Gibbs will receive the honor Thursday evening, Oct. 9, at the inaugural McGraw Symposium to be held at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in Midtown Manhattan.

Gibbs, a former SABEW board member, is being honored for her years of service to the organization, including key leadership roles with the Best in Business award program, a 2013 strategic review and an ongoing international expansion.

“As emcee of the Best in Business awards banquet, a moderator of many successful programs and in her travels abroad, Lisa has been a true ambassador for SABEW,” said Marty Wolk, SABEW president and managing editor of MSN Money. “She has offered wise counsel to me and many other past presidents and board members to help shape the future of SABEW, and is truly deserving of this award.”

Prior to joining the AP, Lisa was a senior writer at Money magazine, specializing in investigative consumer watchdog projects and managing real estate coverage for Money.com.

She also spent five years as executive business editor of the Miami Herald. Under her leadership, the Herald’s Business section won two Best in Business awards for General Excellence from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

She is a four-time finalist for the Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism, and shared the Loeb with Money colleagues in 2012 for a series on seniors and money. That year she also won a Best in Business award in the Personal Finance category.

Gibbs also is a former board member of Broward Bulldog, a nonprofit local investigative website.

The McGraw symposium is part of SABEW’s annual New York fall conference, which also includes a daylong personal finance workshop co-sponsored by the National Endowment for Financial Education.
