Winner – Reuters: Ambushed at home

  • Contributors – Joshua Schneyer, Michael Pell, Andrea Januta, Deborah Nelson
  • Judges’ Comments – Dogged reporting paid off for this team of Reuters reporters who didn’t stop at one story. The team published over a dozen stories on how military families, who shouldn’t have to worry about the roofs over their heads, have battled top brass and the contractors who own and operate the residences. The reporters interviewed more than 100 military families, sources who aren’t known for being open and willing to talk. The story included data — some obtained through public records requests — to back up what sources said and reporters observed. The solid reporting translated into a superbly written, easy-to-read exclusive series of stories that told the plight of military families in a direct manner. “Ambushed at Home” represents the best of what can occur when brave whistle-blowers and powerful reporting come together.
