SABEW calls on the Trump administration to provide the public with timely, accurate information about the coronavirus

The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) calls on the Trump administration to recognize the valuable role that a free press plays in disseminating information about the coronavirus and its impact on society and the economy.

Now is precisely the time that scientists and health professionals, who are the best informed about risks to the public, should be allowed to freely share their views. (Footnote #1). SABEW believes informing the public about the latest developments can play a critical role in efforts to contain the virus. The federal government should not follow China’s poor example of keeping critical information secret. (Footnote #2).

The coronavirus is impacting businesses and investors who are sharing their concerns and updates with the journalists who play an essential role in informing the public about the virus.  Business disruptions due to the coronavirus will have an impact on all economies whether they are local, national or global. Business journalists are uniquely positioned to cover these impacts with thoughtful, ethical coverage. SABEW members are covering the story around the world.

The free flow of information, a cornerstone of our democracy, empowers citizens to take positive action. We urge the Trump administration to provide the public with timely and accurate information about the see coronavirus, so individuals can act to protect themselves, their families and their communities.
