Stuart W. Elliott has been the Editor-in-Chief of The Real Deal since its inception in 2003, helping grow the media outlet from just three employees to nearly 100 today. Started in New York, the company now has eight news bureaus throughout the U.S., making it the biggest b-to-b news site covering real estate in the country.
Under Elliott’s leadership, the editorial team has won more than 50 awards for its coverage, including general excellence awards from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing, Newswomen’s Club of New York Front Page Awards and a record number of awards for a single publication from the National Association of Real Estate Editors.
Elliott has also directed joint investigative projects between The Real Deal and ProPublica and NBC, as well as long form pieces with Politico. In addition, Elliott edited the book “The Closing: Interviews with New York City’s Titans of Real Estate,” and wrote “Building Stories,” a documentary on architecture, which aired on PBS. He most recently edited the book “The New Kings Of New York,” about the history of NYC real estate, named by The New York Post as one of the best books of the year in 2022.
On the business side, Elliott added the title of CEO in November 2019, in recognition of his work across all areas of the company. Under his leadership, the company’s revenue has doubled since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The Real Deal remains completely owned by Elliott and its other founders, with no outside money raised from investors during its two-decade history.
Elliott graduated cum laude from Duke University and received a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism. He lives with his wife, journalist and book author Julie Satow, and their two children in Gramercy.
