Skill Up Schedule

SABEW will hold a skill-building workshop including one-on-one coaching sessions on Friday morning, September 19, at The Wall Street Journal, located at 1211 6th Ave. in New York City.

The workshop is geared towards journalism students and early-career reporters, but is open to all levels of journalism experience. Space is limited.

Registration fees

  • $50 for SABEW members
  • $100 for nonmembers
  • $25 for SABEW student members
  • $50 for nonmember students (includes a one-year SABEW student membership)

The Realities of Organ Transplants: A Look at How The New York Times Uncovered This Story. Earlier this year, the New York Times shed light on the state of organ transplants in the U.S. The Times reporters found that government pressure to increase transplants is making it more risky for donors and putting an imbalance in the fairness of the system. Investigative reporter Brian Rosenthal will discuss how his team delivered this powerhouse report.

Tips on Building Your Career from a 2025 Pulitzer Winner. Every great reporter got their start somewhere and this is your chance to hear how Emily Glazer, a 2025 Pulitzer Prize winner from The Wall Street Journal, became one of the preeminent business journalists in the nation. In a conversation with Marcelo Prince, an enterprise editor at The Journal, Glazer will talk about how she plotted her career, how she owns any beat she takes on and how she has tackled the task of covering billionaire Elon Musk.

Building Your Brand and Getting Booked. Getting the scoop is only part of the job of being a journalist. You also have to be able to make your work sizzle. This includes pitching your ideas, sharing highlights of your coverage with wider audiences and building an impeccable personal brand. In this interactive session, members of the CNBC Editorial team will share tips on raising your game and successfully pitching, preparing and presenting cross platform.

One-on-One Coaching. Sit down for a one-on-one conversation with a newsroom editor or hiring manager during this hands-on session at Skill Up. Mentees will have the chance to have your resume or clips reviewed, practice your story pitch and brush up on your interviewing skills. It’s a great opportunity to make new connections, seek career advice or ask questions about breaking into the industry. Sign up to be a mentor or mentee here by Friday, September 12 at 5 p.m. ET.

Cancellations must be sent via email to [email protected]. All cancellations must be in writing. There is a $20 processing fee for all cancellations until September 5. After that date, requests for refunds will be considered case by case.
