Love of country and love of press freedom go hand in hand.
As SABEW’s First Amendment Committee celebrates the United States’ 250th Anniversary, we are reminded of the importance of speaking out against any threats to the pillars of democracy that allow us to do what we do.
Recently, the Department of Justice subpoenaed national security reporters from The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal and sought their testimony before a grand jury. The subpoenas were withdrawn after both organizations objected, but we remain appalled by the initial actions. There is an implicit threat in this move to all working journalists — from national security to economic stability — that is unprecedented in modern times.
As National Press Club President Mark Schoeff, Jr. wrote: “Journalists cannot effectively serve the public if sources believe reporters may be forced into the role of government witnesses. Even the threat of compelled testimony can chill reporting, deter whistleblowers and make it harder for the public to learn information that powerful institutions would prefer remain hidden.”
As we celebrate Independence Day, SABEW and its First Amendment Committee remain committed to press freedom that sets a high mark for democracies worldwide and to the public’s right to know.
