Covering the auto industry amid the EV transition

June 25, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

For the auto industry, the future is looking … electric. But are the world’s biggest car companies — and drivers themselves — prepared?

Americans can now choose from more than 100 different EV models on the market, helping to supercharge their interest in ditching traditional gas-powered vehicles. EV sales in 2023 jumped 53% from the prior year, according to trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation. Yet, the number of publicly available EV chargers increased about half as fast, marking a ratio of 27 EVs per every publicly available port. Turmoil at Tesla is another bump in the road, after the company laid off most of the employees building its charging network.

From the semiconductor chip shortages and manufacturing setbacks that dominated the coronavirus pandemic to the massive jump in car and insurance prices, the auto industry has been keeping business reporters around the country busy for years. Join our moderator and panel as they discuss tips and strategies for covering the auto industry during this era of massive upheaval.

Moderator: Randy Essex, autos and environment editor, Detroit Free Press
