How to Write Great Business Columns
July 24, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Writing a column can be a tricky task for someone who has worked in journalism for years. A good column will have a strong voice and speak with authority. It may offer personal observations — something many reporters may not be accustomed to doing. It’s not news, but it needs to be relevant and timely. It will often offer advice or establish a viewpoint.
In this session, we pick the brains of well-known columnists Michelle Singletary, author of the nationally syndicated personal finance column “The Color of Money,” and Jill Schlesinger, the host of “Jill on Money” and “MoneyWatch” podcasts, to find out what they think makes for a great business column. They will share some of the lessons they’ve learned on the job, provide tips for writers looking to break into this area and discuss how they continue to come up with new ideas to keep their readers engaged. Mark DeCambre, editor-in-chief at MarketWatch, will be the moderator.
