Fifteen journalists from across the United States have been selected as fellows for SABEW’s fifth annual Health Care Symposium sponsored by The Commonwealth Fund.
The group will gather in Washington, D.C., Dec. 1-3 at the National Press Club and at the Bloomberg–Washington, D.C., bureau. The symposium will give fellows a head start covering a new administration and Congress, which have vowed to make sweeping changes in health care.
The 2016 health care fellows are:

- Sharadha Kalyanam, U.S. financial services and insurance reporter, S&P Global Market Intelligence
- Tami Luhby, senior writer, CNN Money
- Alicia McElhaney, reporter, TheStreet
- Tom Murphy, reporter, The Associated Press
- Helaine Olen, columnist, Slate
- Laura Santhanam, data producer, PBS NewsHour
- Preeti Singh, journalism student, Columbia Journalism School (will participate as both a Fellow and social media reporter for SABEW).
- Pashtana Usufzy, medical/health reporter, Las Vegas Review-Journal
Speakers will include Sara Collins, vice president for the Health Care Coverage and Access program at The Commonwealth Fund; Justin Giovannelli, associate research professor and project director at the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute; Erin Fuse Brown, assistant professor of law at Georgia State University; Jordan Rau, reporter at Kaiser Health News; Thomas Miller, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Leigh Purvis, director of health services research in AARP’s Public Policy Institute; Fernanda Alonso, associate at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University; and Jon Greenberg, staff writer at PolitiFact.
“The symposium comes at a critical time as the president-elect and Republicans in Congress vow to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. With the absence of specifics on the health care overhaul, journalists need support to cover an unclear and rapidly changing health care landscape,” said Kathleen Graham, executive director, SABEW.
The conference is being organized by Ridgely Ochs, former health care reporter at Newsday.

The symposium is a continuation of SABEW’s relations with The Commonwealth Fund to educate journalists and to provide training on health care.
