The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW) takes strong exception to the accusations made by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has accused reporters who cover his company of being biased and influenced by advertising interests.
Musk made his statements on Twitter May 23-24 after Consumer Reports announced it would not recommend the Tesla Model 3, citing performance quality issues and inconsistent braking, among other issues. He criticized what he called the “holier-than-thou hypocrisy of big media companies.”
“It is disturbing that the CEO of a publicly traded company is attempting to discredit media reports by questioning the integrity of professional journalists,” SABEW’s First Amendment Committee said in a statement.
“Professional business journalists will continue to cover Tesla and other companies without fear or favor, and SABEW will continue to support the work of business writers and editors, and their employers to better serve the public,” SABEW president Mark Hamrick said. He added that SABEW would extend an invitation to Musk to speak at a future conference.
