With the wrongful detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich reaching the 100-day mark on July 7, SABEW, the Association for Business Journalists, renews its call for his immediate release.
We join with The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Department of State and other organizations in demanding his return to the newsroom and the dropping of espionage charges that are wrong on their face.
This arrest is an attack on press freedom and has grave implications for the future of independent reporting. We should not be arrested for doing our jobs.
We encourage our members to use the hashtags #IStandWithEvan and #FreeEvan.
We are encouraged by recent contact between Evan and the U.S. Ambassador. We believe he should be released without conditions, and we will continue to update members about progress on gaining Evan’s freedom.
