SABEW, the association for business journalists, joins our colleagues around the world in protest over the secret trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gerschkovich in Russia. No evidence has been provided to support the accusations against him and he was fully accredited by Russian authorities at the time of his arrest 15 months ago.
We echo the words of the Wall Street Journal which described his arrest and trial as “a devastating assault on his freedom and his work and an unfathomable attack on the free press.”
SABEW, through its First Amendment Committee, will continue to advocate for Evan’s release without conditions.
With the U.S. Independence Day holiday approaching, we encourage our members to consider the values enshrined in the First Amendment, which is a bedrock for our democracy and provides a legal framework for holding public officials responsible for their conduct.
Our hearts go out to Evan and the Gershkovich family which has shown remarkable resilience during this ordeal.
