Dear SABEW Friends,
With just a few weeks left in 2025, it’s clear that many of the year’s biggest business stories will continue shaping the conversation well into next year. This year raised pressing questions that remain unresolved: How will the economy adjust under a second Trump administration? Will the Federal Reserve stay on its path of interest rate cuts? How will companies deepen and refine their use of AI across industries? And how are households impacted by tariffs and increased prices on consumer goods?
SABEW members are doing the reporting that is critical to making sense of the world around us and helping the public understand the ever-changing complex economic landscape.
The mission of SABEW remains to increase members’ skills and knowledge through continuous education and it has done this throughout 2025 with a number of activities:
- Skill Up, which once again brought together journalists and students at The Wall Street Journal’s New York headquarters, this year with a look at how The New York Times uncovered the realities of organ transplants in the U.S.; tips on building your career from a 2025 Pulitzer winner; and building a professional brand in an evolving media landscape.
- Goldschmidt data fellowships in Washington D.C., and at the St. Louis Federal Reserve bank thanks to generous support from the Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation.
- 15 virtual training webinars
- SABEW’s spring conference in Arlington, VA featuring conversations with newsroom leaders, interactive skill sessions, and networking opportunities across the business journalism community. We also celebrated the Best in Business Award winners and finalists.
- Resurrecting the Personal Finance Summit after a long hiatus, bringing together journalists from all backgrounds to discover how personal finance stories can build trust and illustrate the impact of economic change. Attendees left the summit with practical tools and insights to elevate their reporting. Every story is a money story and we were excited to offer this training with the support of the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE).
- Webinars for business reporters who cover health care on how private equity is transforming health care in America as part of our support from The Commonwealth Fund, along with a medical device webinar and a MedTech fellowship workshop in partnership with The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation.
- SABEW Canada Best in Business awards and other training events.
SABEW also helped women and journalists of color advance their careers through the Xana Fellowship and Sho Fund.
In total, nearly 800 journalists increased their skills and knowledge through virtual training sessions; 197 SABEW members were honored for excellence in business journalism across all our award programs; and 81 fellowship opportunities were provided.
And our First Amendment Committee produced seven statements supporting press freedom and advocating for full access to financial and economic data.
SABEW’s mission of banding together in the individual and collective pursuit of the highest standards of business, financial and economic journalism and thoughtful reporting of economic events remains vital. We need your help to continue this mission.
